Plant
Lavender is a rustic plant native to the Mediterranean basin.
The plant loves sun and wind, but fears water stagnation.
It resists scorching temperatures and winter frosts down to -20°C.
It can grow in areas up to 1200 metres above sea level.
Planting
The best time to plant lavender is in spring (March to June) or autumn (September to November).
It reaches full development in about three years, and once mature, the lavender field will remain productive for about 10 years. The plant's longevity, however, can reach 15-20 years.
Cultivation
It doesn't need an irrigation system, just give it some water only during periods of prolonged drought. Only mowing of the grass in the inter-rows and removal of weeds near the seedlings is necessary. It is recommended to spread the verdigris once the cut has been made to disinfect the plant and protect it
Harvest
Production can start from the first year with an increase from the fourth year.
The flowers are harvested in July and August. They can then be distilled using a steam current to obtain the essential oil that can be used in cosmetics and aromatherapy. Alternatively the flowers can also be dried to make scented bags.
